WHAT IS A BUNKER GEAR RENTAL?
Bunker gear rental is when a fire department, training academy, or college pays to rent firefighter protective clothing (turnout gear) rather than purchasing it outright. The gear includes:
- Coat and Pants (with thermal and moisture barriers)
Not yet included in our current rental program are:
- Helmet
- Gloves
- Hood
- Boots
Why Rent Instead of Buy?
- Cost savings upfront – A new set of bunker gear can cost $3,000–$6,000. Renting spreads that cost over time, avoiding a large initial investment.
- Flexibility for short-term use – Perfect for fire academies, colleges, or departments training new recruits who may not stay long-term.
- Reduced storage waste – Departments avoid buying gear that ends up sitting unused if firefighters leave.
- Compliance with NFPA-1851 – Included with your rental is annual inspection, cleaning, and maintenance in the agreement, ensuring safety and compliance.
- Predictable budgeting – Fixed rental fees make it easier to plan financially than replacing gear unexpectedly.
How does it work?
- A Rental Agreement is signed between the renter (college/department) and the gear provider.
- The renter collects sizing of the individuals who need gear & sends it to Sani Gear.
- Fitting Days are available and provide on-site, one-on-one sizing for firefighters or students to ensure accurate measurements and properly fitted bunker gear for larger groups.
- The renter pays monthly rental fees.
- Maintenance, cleaning, and routine repairs are included.
- At the end of the rental term, gear is either returned, extended, or swapped for newer sets.
Who uses rentals?
- Fire academies and colleges running firefighter training programs or pre-service courses.
- Municipal fire departments needing temporary gear for new recruits waiting on new sets to arrive.
- Volunteer and composite departments with fluctuating membership or limited budgets.
- Departments currently on their maintenance schedule where multiple sets are out for cleaning, inspection, or repair.
- Departments impacted by supply chain delays waiting on new bunker gear orders from manufacturers.
- Departments responding to sudden staffing increases, such as seasonal hires or expanded training classes.
- Industrial fire brigades for training, standby coverage, or annual skills refreshers.
- Camp-based programs (e.g., Camp Molly, youth fire camps) running short-term events requiring fully outfitted participants.
- Small northern, rural, or remote departments that operate on tight budgets and can’t justify purchasing multiple spare sets.
